The Norwegians call their gifted medicine people healers or shamans or Noaidi. Native Americans refer to them as a medicine man or woman. The medicine path is a difficult one. There is nothing glamorous about being a healer, these people give only of themselves and never ask for anything in return. They are rare men and women who often undergo spiritual tests that shape the nature of their work. One of the biggest tests of all is the death of the ego and the transformation from self-realization to becoming god-realized. Many healers do not make it past the earthbound tests remaining engaged in glamor and self-importance and only a few become self-realized. If they remain true to their calling and surrender to Creator, they experience several deaths of the ego. As this process happens it is common for them to be tested again and again. These painful passages in their lives are what help to make them understand the human condition. Many people would like the gifts of those that walk the medicine path, but they do not realize what it takes for these people to maintain and care for their abilities.

The modern Western world of medicine is fraught with extraordinary expectations of those who work as doctors especially because they are often portrayed in television and movies as super heroes who are able to deliver what in reality are unrealistic outcomes. Those who work in Western medicine go through intense training and study that comes with a price in the same way that shamans, healers and those following the medicine path do. Doctors are known for the savior syndrome. They save lives through medicine, surgery and techniques that have proven their worth in a Western medicine setting. This kind of experience can alter the psyche of the practitioner, often giving a false sense of power. The ego plays a big part in Western medicine, and equally has its grips on healers, shamans and medicine men.

The path of the medicine man or woman requires being in service and putting others' well-being before their own. It also demands they have clear boundaries and practice self-care. We see this with Bear who is constantly helping others with doctoring and healing. Naturopaths, acupuncturists and herbalists share a connection to Earth Medicine, and like shamans, healers and medicine people their path is directly related to the Earth; they are dedicated to the true nature of doctoring. To be a medicine man or woman requires a combination of gifts and skills that is often derived from teachings passed down through a family member or a mentor. For most, the teachings are based on ones passed down through the clan, family lineage or the particular tribe the healer was born into. The medicine path requires understanding of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. The most gifted healers have innate qualities that cannot be mimicked or made up.
